Jeffrey E. Sohl is Director of the Center for Venture Research and Professor of Entrepreneurship and Decision Sciences at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire. He received his Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University and his MBA and Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the Whittemore School he was a consultant to the Department of Energy in the area of public policy analysis. His current research interests are in early-stage equity financing for high growth ventures. He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, the eCoast Technology Roundtable and MerchantBanc, and the Editorial Board for Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. He also serves on the New Hampshire Governor’s Advisory Committee on Capital Formation and is on the Board of Directors for NetworkNH. In 2006 he was awarded the national Hans Severiens Award by the Kauffman Foundation in recognition of his research on angel investing in the US. He has presented his research in academic and practitioner forums in the United States, Europe and Asia, and in briefings for several government agencies and scholars from the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, Asia and Africa. He has appeared on CNBC, MSNBC, National Public Radio, NHPTV’s NH Outlook, and has been quoted in Inc., Forbes, Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Red Herring, Newsweek, Business Week, Newsweek-Japan, Financial Times, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and the Financial Times-France. He has written many articles which have been published in academic and business journals, including Venture Capital: An International Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance, the Social Science Journal, the Journal of Forecasting, Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, Entrepreneurship 2000 and the Journal of Business Venturing.


 

Aaron C. Newman
Founder and President of Techrigy

Aaron C. Newman is the Founder and President of Techrigy, the pioneers in social media measurement. Aaron is responsible for leading the organization and defining the company's overall vision.

Aaron is a serial entrepreneur having previously founded two successful startups, DbSecure and Application Security, Inc. Aaron has authored several books, the lastest book being "Enterprise 2.0 Implementation" for McGraw-Hill. Aaron has also authored several patents on subjects such as social media and database security.

At Application Security, Inc., Aaron continues to provide strategic direction for the company. Over the past five years, Aaron has built a best-in-breed management team and has grown AppSecInc to over 1,000 enterprise customers and 125 employees. Over the past decade, Aaron has been widely regarded as one of the world's leading database security experts. Aaron is the co-author of the Oracle Security Handbook, printed by Oracle Press, and has delivered presentations on the topic of application security at conferences around the world.

Prior to AppSecInc, Aaron founded DbSecure. Aaron led the acquisition of DbSecure by the publicly-traded company Internet Security Systems (ISSX) in 1998. After this acquisition, Aaron managed the development of database security solutions at ISS. Aaron has held several other technology positions as an IT consultant with Price Waterhouse, as a developer for Bankers Trust, and as an independent IT consultant. Aaron proudly served in the U.S. Army during the 1st Gulf War.

Jill Hurst-Wahl

Jill Hurst-Wahl of Hurst Associates, Ltd. is an information consultant, speaker and author/blogger, who frequently focuses on social networking tools. Known as "Jillianna Suisei" in Second Life, Hurst-Wahl in real life has become a Second Life advocate by giving interviews, writing articles, and speaking formally and informally about virtual worlds. Since January 2007, she has conducted continuing education sessions for University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a graduate course for Syracuse University and many workshops all on Second Life.


 

William J. Doolittle

As Vice President of Sales & Marketing for USA Datanet, Bill is responsible for all sales & marketing strategy and execution for all products in the commercial, residential and carrier segments of the emerging IP telephony marketplace. Currently, Bill is focused on the expansion of Hosted IP Communications service for business in Upstate NY markets. This breakthrough service does away with the need to purchase, install or maintain a traditional premise-based phone system.

Bill was promoted to Vice President of Marketing in September 2005 of USA Datanet after previously serving as Director of Consumer Marketing for the company since early 2004. Before coming to USA Datanet, Bill had worked at ComGroup/MRA, a division of Syracuse-based advertising agency Mark Russell Associates, where he spent more than five years managing marketing communications and advertising programs for the firm’s clients in the communications and technology industries. Prior to joining ComGroup/MRA in 1998, Doolittle spent more than 16 years in various marketing and senior management positions for Primestar Partners, a major satellite TV provider, and NewChannels Corporation, a major cable TV operator headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y.

Doolittle is a graduate of Syracuse University with a B.S. in Marketing and a minor in Economics, and also holds a Masters of Business Administration in Finance from Syracuse University’s Graduate School of Business.


 

J. Sean Branagan
President
Communigration, Inc.,

Sean Branagan is president of Communigration, Inc., a technology marketing firm, headquartered in Syracuse, NY, (in the Syracuse Technology Garden) with technology business clients across the US and UK. He is also a partner in C3 Strategic, LLC, a management consulting and venture firm that works with early-stage technology companies nationwide, seeking growth, funding, new markets, management team development, and M&A services.

Sean is a recognized expert in interactive marketing and has made a career of developing innovative marketing and interactive marketing plans for technology and business-to-business companies. He is also Entrepreneur in Residence at the Syracuse Technology Garden, helping start-up and early stage technology companies in the Greater Syracuse area. A graduate of the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, much of Sean's career experience has been in marketing and communications with firms selling technical products and services. Most recently, he has served as Senior Director of Marketing for a $125 million national IT and Internet Services Company headquartered in Boston's Route 128 technology sector.

Sean's experience with the Internet and World Wide Web began in 1993 at a national super computing center. Since then, he has engaged in online strategy, interactive marketing and major website producing for organizations nationwide, including most-notably the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Cutco Cutlery, the DuPont Registry, Federal Business Council, Indium Corporation of America, Lighthouse International, MariSafe, NaviSite, Rack Room Shoes, Time-Warner/Road Runner, Welch-Allyn and Wilton-Armetale.

For five years, Sean has taught a graduate-level course in interactive marketing and advertising at Syracuse University's Newhouse School. He has lectured at other universities and has presented to business groups at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Caterpillar, NYS's Dept of State, and Carrier Corp. He has also presented at seminars, conferences and trade shows in New York, San Francisco, Raleigh, Tampa, Charlotte, Maui, Austin, Buffalo, Denver, and Washington, DC. In 2003, Sean was invited to present at Internet World in San Jose, CA.


 

John Whiteside
Senior Consultant

John is a Senior Consultant with expertise in marketing strategy, product marketing, and marketing communications, including building processes for database marketing and effective sales/marketing interaction. He has experience in the software, managed services, and the collaboration/messaging industries.

With an MBA in marketing from Northeastern University and a BS in communications from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, John has held several positions in product marketing and marketing communications with managed services providers NaviSite and Interliant, global telecommunications provider Cable & Wireless, and software developers InteliData and EIS. John’s experience ranges from high level market analysis and planning to managing tactical programs and sales support.

John has particular experience with the integration of diverse businesses in merger/acquisition situations or product line integration, having guided these efforts at Interliant, NaviSite, and Cable & Wireless. John’s marketing abilities span the range from high-level planning to final execution for successful, profitable market entry.

 

Nasir Ali
Vice President
New Venture Development for the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce

Ali's primary mission is to support the creation of an entrepreneurial culture in Syracuse and the Central New York region. In addition to managing the Syracuse Technology Garden incubator facility and associated entrepreneurial services (www.thetechgarden.com), Ali also is Executive Director of The Seed Capital Fund of CNY (www.scfcny.com) a private investment fund created by 42 successful Central New York investors. Ali moved to Syracuse from Washington, DC, where he was an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton charged with helping IRS Commissioners manage over $1 billion in technology modernization and workforce restructuring initiatives. Prior to this, he co-founded New Think (a mobile commerce services firm) and WritersPoint (an offshore technical writing company). Before beginning his career as an entrepreneur, Ali turned around large-scale software, telecommunications, and systems integration projects for Fortune 100 companies. He received his MBA in Finance and Operations Management from Yale University's School of Management, where he helped initiate a joint Masters degree program in Industrial Environmental Management. Scott Murphy
Managing Director

Mr. Murphy is an experienced venture capitalist and entrepreneur whose background includes public service. His primary responsibilities include sourcing and closing investments in New York and managing Advantage's New York portfolio. Mr. Murphy joined Advantage in 2001.

Prior to Advantage, Mr. Murphy founded three different Internet-related businesses: Small World Sports, a pioneer in providing fantasy sports games. Sold to Vulcan Ventures/The Sporting News, it is now the engine that runs both Fox Sports and The Sporting News fantasy games;Baazee.com, the leading on-line auction site in India was sold to eBay (Nasdaq:EBAY); and a web consultancy that was sold to IXL, which went public and later merged with Scient.

Scott Murphy served in the Missouri State government working for two different governors. He earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.


 

Debora K. LaBudde
Managing General Partner

Ms. LaBudde is Managing General Partner of ENVOI Venture Partners, an early stage venture capital firm which invests in both IT/technology and life sciences. She has close to 15 years of consulting, venture financing, investment banking and early stage company management experience in the life science and technology sectors.

Earlier in her career, Ms. LaBudde was Director of Business Development for Bausch & Lomb, Inc. where she was involved in over a dozen successful M&A and licensing transactions representing more than $1.5 billion of aggregate value for the company.

Ms. LaBudde was also a founder and head of business development for a venture capital backed technology-solutions company which was spun-off from Bausch & Lomb with a $50 million capital commitment from financial and strategic investors.

Ms. LaBudde is on the Board of Directors of Techrigy, Inc., provider of software solutions for regulating and monitoring social media, and is an Advisor to Wakonda Technologies, an early stage photovoltaic solar cell company.
